SAP Business One vs. Business ByDesign: How to Determine Which Solution Is Right for Your Business?

December 6, 2021 Lana Cook, Marketing Coordinator

As a midmarket company searching for a new ERP solution, you’ve likely come across SAP Business One and SAP Business ByDesign. Both software products are established, industry-tested solutions for midmarket companies that are looking to streamline key business functions across financials, operations, sales, and marketing, but knowing the difference between the two is important.

Take a look at our detailed “Consideration Checklist” from our previous blog How to Select the Right ERP For Your Business as we review the features of each solution to help you determine which SAP ERP system best fits your business needs.

SAP Business One

SAP Business One (B1) is specifically designed for small businesses and subsidiaries ($1M – $250M) that are experiencing growth and need a more robust solution than using spreadsheets, Quickbooks, or a custom-built system. B1 enables full, end-to-end integration and is ideal for businesses operating within the Manufacturing, Wholesale Distribution, and Commercial Services industries that require between 5 to 250 users. Business One is primarily delivered on-prem, but can also be hosted, or deployed in the cloud. It is easily customizable, with a wide selection of add-ons and extensions, such as Resolv and FieldVu.

However, for those companies that are scaling significantly, or need to integrate acquisitions, or foresee a higher user volume over time, SAP Business One has limitations in areas, such as:

  • Multi-GAPP Reporting
  • Out-of-the-box integration options and web services
  • Intercompany trading and transactions
  • Sales Planning
  • Revision Control
  • Employee Self-Service (HR Management)
  • Organizational Structure Management
  • Business Area Management

If we were to use our Consideration Checklist against SAP Business One, it would look something like this:

SAP Business One

Your Business Goals

You’re a small company or subsidiary needing a flexible, on-prem, or cloud ERP with integrated business intelligence, including financial management, CRM, and mobility.

×

Budget Expectations

You need an affordable solution that’s customizable and has ongoing support.

×

Time to Implement

You’re looking for a quick turnaround and fast implementation.

×

Internal Support

You are either the business owner or a decision-maker at the company with a primary contact in mind.

×

Reporting & Analytics

You are seeking overall financial reporting and want to be able to pull up in-depth analyses of sales and customer management activities.

×

Time to ROI

You want to recoup your investment as quickly as possible, with the opportunity for further customization and investment in the future.

SAP Business ByDesign

In comparison to Business One, the main difference with Business ByDesign is the size and scale of the companies that it can accommodate. Business ByDesign is ideal for midsize or high-growth small companies ($25M to $1B) that want to expand their IT infrastructure with pre-built processes for everything from finance and sales to product management and purchasing.

ByDesign supports businesses within the industries covered by Business One, but it is also uniquely positioned for other industries, like Life Sciences and Aerospace & Defense. It is purely cloud-based and deployed via SaaS. The system can scale from 5 to 1000 users – although many companies can accommodate up to 9,000+ users. Although ByDesign is not as customizable as Business One, it does offer more functionality out-of-the-box compared to Business One, such as 255+ pre-built web services, localization for international companies, intercompany trading comes standard, mobility, timesheets, and expense tracking.

Another key difference between Business One and ByDesign is the level of support. While Business One’s standard support hours are limited to business hours, ByDesign has 24/7 standard support, which is a big benefit for international companies.

Let’s revisit our Consideration Checklist for SAP Business ByDesign:
